How Long Does a UK Visa Take in 2026? Processing Times by Visa Type
Current UK visa processing times for 2026 — Skilled Worker, spouse, student, and ILR. Standard, priority, and super-priority services explained. What delays applications and how to avoid them.
UK visa processing times vary significantly by visa type, where you are applying from, and which service level you choose. This guide covers current processing times for 2026 — including the standard, priority, and super-priority options — based on Home Office published guidance and commonly reported real-world experiences.
Skilled Worker visa processing times
For applications made outside the UK (overseas applications), the standard processing time is approximately 3 weeks from the date of biometric submission at a UKVI-authorised service centre. This applies to most nationalities including Indian, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Filipino applicants.
Priority service (where available) aims to process applications in 5 working days from biometric submission. Super-priority aims for a decision by the end of the next working day. Both services cost additional fees on top of the main visa fee.
For in-country switching (applying from inside the UK, for example switching from a Graduate visa to a Skilled Worker visa), the standard processing time is up to 8 weeks. Priority service reduces this to 5 working days.
Note: processing times are measured from when your biometrics are submitted — not from when you upload your documents online. If there is a delay between your online application and your biometric appointment, the clock does not start until the appointment is complete.
UK spouse and family visa processing times
The UK spouse (family) visa has some of the longest processing times of any UK visa type. For applications made outside the UK, the Home Office target is 24 weeks for standard applications. Most applications are decided within 6–12 weeks in practice, but complex cases — particularly those requiring credibility interviews — can take longer.
Priority service is available for spouse visa applications in most countries, aiming for a decision within 30 working days from biometrics. A super-priority service (next working day) is not consistently available for family visas at all UKVI service centres.
For in-country applications (leave to remain on the family route), standard processing is up to 8 weeks. Priority is 5 working days.
Student visa processing times
Student visa applications from outside the UK are processed in approximately 3 weeks from biometrics. This applies both to standard CAS-based applications and the Student visa for short courses. The Home Office strongly advises applying no more than 6 months before your course start date.
Priority and super-priority services are available for student visas in most countries. Super-priority aims for a next-day decision.
ILR and Settled Status processing times
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) applications made on paper or online without a same-day appointment take up to 6 months to process in 2026. If your ILR application includes biometric re-enrolment (for example, because your biometric data has expired), allow additional time.
Premium same-day ILR appointments (Super Premium) are available at selected UKVI offices and give a decision on the day. These are limited and expensive but appropriate if your current leave is running short.
EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) applications for pre-settled or settled status typically take 5 working days or less, though complex cases — particularly late applications, absences over 5 years, or criminal record disclosures — take significantly longer.
What causes delays
Incomplete or inconsistent documentsare the most common cause of delays. If UKVI requests further documents (a "further information request"), the processing clock pauses until you respond. Always submit every required document in the correct format before sending your application.
Biometric appointment availability varies by country. In some countries — particularly India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Bangladesh — VFS Global or TLScontact appointment slots book up several weeks in advance. Booking your biometric appointment early is the single most effective way to avoid delays.
Salary or sponsorship queries sometimes arise when the Home Office checks your Certificate of Sponsorship data against employer records. Ensuring your CoS accurately reflects your salary and job description reduces this risk.
Previous immigration history can extend processing time if UKVI needs to review past applications or entry records. This includes previous refusals, overstays, or curtailments — even those resolved years ago.
Priority and super-priority fees (2026)
Priority and super-priority fees vary by visa type and country. As a rough guide, the UK priority service costs around £250–500 on top of your standard visa fee. Super-priority costs £800–1,000. These are paid at time of application and are non-refundable even if the application is refused — the fee covers the fast decision, not the outcome.
Always check the current fee on GOV.UK before applying. Fees change without much notice.
When to apply
For outside-UK applications, you can apply up to 3 months before your intended start date. Applying too early means your visa arrives before you are ready to travel — but the visa start date is fixed to your application, not your travel date, so a long gap is not ideal.
For in-country applications, you should apply before your current leave expires. If you apply before your leave expires, Section 3C leave continues your permission to stay and work while the application is pending — even if the 8-week standard processing time passes. If you apply after your leave has expired, you are in overstay territory, which affects future applications.
