Student Visa UK — Document Checklist & Complete Guide
The UK Student visa lets you study at a licensed university or college for the duration of your course. This guide covers who qualifies, maintenance requirements, the CAS process, and exactly which documents to gather — so you can submit a complete and accurate application.
Do I qualify for the Student visa?
Unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor
Your university or college must be a licensed sponsor. You will receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) once your offer is unconditional.
English language requirement
You must show English equivalent to B2 CEFR for a degree-level course, or B1 for below-degree courses.
Maintenance funds
You must hold enough funds for course fees plus living costs: £1,334/month in London or £1,023/month outside London, for up to 9 months.
ATAS clearance (if required)
Required for some science, engineering and technology subjects at postgraduate level. Apply well in advance as it can take several weeks.
Parental consent (if under 18)
If you are under 18, you must provide written parental or guardian consent.

Valid passport or travel document

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
A unique reference number from your university. Contains course details, fees, and your personal details.
Proof of English language ability
SELT test certificate, or evidence your qualification was taught in English, or nationality exemption.
Bank statements (maintenance)
£1,334/month (London) or £1,023/month (outside London) for up to 9 months. Funds must have been held for 28 consecutive days.
ATAS clearance certificate
If your course is on the ATAS list, you must obtain clearance before applying. Check gov.uk for the current list.
TB test certificate (if required)
Required if you are from a listed country. The test must be at an approved UKVI clinic.
Academic qualifications
Official certificates or transcripts from your most recent qualification to show you meet the course entry requirements.
Parental consent letter (if under 18)
Written, signed consent from your parents or guardians, plus their identity documents.
Proof of any previous UK visas
Include BRP and any previous refusal letters — you must declare these on your application.
