How to Apply for a UK Spouse Visa in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

A complete step-by-step guide to applying for a UK spouse visa in 2026 — eligibility, financial evidence, relationship documents, online application, fees, and processing times.

Applying for a UK spouse visa involves meeting a financial threshold, gathering relationship evidence, and submitting an online application with supporting documents. This step-by-step guide covers every stage of the process for 2026, from checking eligibility to receiving your visa.

Step 1: Check you meet the eligibility requirements

Before you spend time or money gathering documents, confirm you meet the core requirements:

  • You are legally married or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or a person settled in the UK (with ILR or settled status). Unmarried partners can also apply if they have lived together for at least two years.
  • Your UK sponsor earns at least £29,000 per year(as of April 2026). This threshold is set to rise further. If the sponsor’s income is below this, qualifying savings can make up the shortfall using the Home Office formula.
  • You meet the English language requirement at CEFR A1 level for an initial entry clearance application. This is usually met via an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) such as the IELTS Life Skills A1, or via a degree taught in English, or by being a national of a majority English-speaking country.
  • You have adequate accommodation in the UK — a property owned or rented by the sponsor that will not be overcrowded when all occupants are included.
  • Your relationship is genuine and subsisting — you must be in a genuine, continuing relationship. The Home Office assesses this through the documents you submit.

Step 2: Book and take the English language test

If you are not exempt from the English language requirement, you must pass an approved SELT before you can apply. The most common choice is the IELTS Life Skills A1 test (Speaking and Listening). You can book it through the British Council or IDP IELTS.

Allow 4–8 weeks from booking to receiving your result, depending on your location. Your result certificate must be in date at the time of application — most certificates are valid for two years.

Step 3: Gather your financial evidence

Financial evidence is the most complex part of a spouse visa application. The category of evidence you rely on depends on your sponsor’s employment situation:

  • Category A (salaried, employed for 6+ months): last 6 payslips, employer letter confirming salary, and last 6 months of bank statements showing salary paid in.
  • Category B (variable income or employed less than 6 months): last 6 months of payslips, bank statements for 6 months, and a letter from the employer confirming the contract is continuing.
  • Category F/G (self-employed): tax returns, HMRC self-assessment records, and accountant’s letter. Specific rules apply depending on how long the business has been trading.
  • Category D (savings top-up): if income is below the threshold, savings held for at least 6 months can make up the shortfall. Formula: savings needed = £16,000 + (annual shortfall × 2.5).

For a full explanation of all six financial evidence categories, see the spouse visa financial requirement guide.

Step 4: Gather your relationship evidence

The Home Office requires evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. Strong relationship evidence includes:

  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Photographs together across a range of dates and occasions
  • WhatsApp or messaging app chat history (screenshots showing an ongoing relationship)
  • Call records or email correspondence
  • Joint bank account statements or financial transfers between you
  • Evidence of visits — travel bookings, passport stamps, hotel receipts
  • Statutory declaration confirming the relationship
  • Statements from family members or friends who know you both

There is no fixed minimum amount of evidence. More varied evidence, covering a longer period, is stronger. If you have only been together a short time, quality of evidence matters more than quantity.

Step 5: Prepare your accommodation evidence

You need to show that you have a place to live in the UK that will not be overcrowded when you move in. Evidence includes:

  • Mortgage statement showing the sponsor owns the property, or a tenancy agreement in the sponsor’s name
  • If renting: a letter from the landlord confirming permission for you to live there
  • If staying with family: a letter from the homeowner confirming this, plus evidence the property will not be overcrowded

Step 6: Complete the online application

The spouse visa application is completed at gov.uk/apply-for-uk-visa. You will need to create or sign in to a GOV.UK account and select the correct visa type — “Family visa: partner”.

The online form asks you for:

  • Your personal details and travel history
  • Your sponsor’s details and immigration status
  • Details of your financial evidence
  • Details of your accommodation
  • Your English language test results (or exemption basis)
  • Any previous visa applications or refusals

Take care with the financial sections — errors here are a common reason for delays and requests for further information. Answer every question as it applies to your specific situation.

Step 7: Pay the application fee

The Home Office application fee as of April 2026 is:

  • £1,938 if you are applying from outside the UK
  • £1,321 if you are applying from inside the UK (further leave to remain)

You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) upfront — currently £1,035 per year of leave, paid at the time of application.

Step 8: Book your biometric appointment

After paying, you book an appointment to enrol your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). If you are outside the UK, this is at a UKVI VAC in your country. If you are in the UK, this is at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre.

At the appointment, you also upload your supporting documents (if not already done online) or have them scanned. Bring your original documents — passport, financial evidence, relationship evidence — to the appointment.

Step 9: Wait for a decision

Standard processing time for spouse visas applied for from outside the UK is 6–24 weeks. From inside the UK, standard processing is approximately 8 weeks. A Priority Service (faster processing within 5 working days for in-country applications, or within 3–5 weeks from outside) is available at an additional cost.

Do not book flights or make irreversible travel plans until you have received a decision.

Step 10: Receive your visa and travel

If your application is approved from outside the UK, a vignette (sticker) is placed in your passport valid for 30 days — you must travel to the UK within this window. Once you arrive, you use the vignette to enter and then collect your BRP (or access your eVisa) to confirm your leave.

If approved from inside the UK, your leave is extended digitally and you receive a new eVisa confirmation.
