UK ILR Documents Checklist 2026: Everything You Need for Your Application

The complete document checklist for an Indefinite Leave to Remain application in 2026 — identity documents, absence records, Life in the UK test, English language evidence, and route-specific requirements.

An ILR application requires a substantial set of documents covering your entire five-year qualifying period. Missing or incorrectly formatted documents are one of the most common reasons ILR applications are delayed or refused. This guide sets out exactly what you need, organised by category.

Core identity documents

  • Current valid passport — must be valid at the time of application and ideally have at least six months remaining.
  • All previous passports — include every passport you have held during the five-year qualifying period. The Home Office uses these to verify your travel history and absence record.
  • All BRP cards — every Biometric Residence Permit card issued during your qualifying period. If you have lost a BRP, contact the Home Office before applying. From 2024 onwards, BRPs have been replaced by eVisas — print a copy of your UKVI account status page instead.

Proof of five-year continuous lawful residence

You must demonstrate that your leave has been valid and unbroken throughout the qualifying period. Include:

  • Visa grant letters and approval emails for each visa held during the qualifying period, showing the grant date and expiry date.
  • Any in-country extension applications — a screenshot or PDF confirmation from the Home Office showing the date you applied to extend, which proves your section 3C leave (the right to remain while your application was pending) was in force between visas.

Absence record

You must show you have not been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period during your qualifying five years.

  • Absence table — a spreadsheet or table listing every trip outside the UK: date of departure, date of return, destination, and purpose. The total absences in any 12-month window must not exceed 180 days.
  • Passport entry and exit stamps — for travel before the UK introduced e-Gates, entry stamps in older passports provide corroboration. The UKVI system also holds your travel records electronically.

Life in the UK test certificate

  • Pass notification letter from the test provider — the certificate must show you passed. The pass is valid for life and does not need to be within a certain time period of your application.

English language evidence

Required unless you are exempt. One of the following:

  • SELT certificate at B1 CEFR level or above from an approved provider (IELTS Life Skills, Trinity College London, etc.). Must be in date — most SELT certificates expire after two years.
  • Degree certificate from a UK institution, or a recognised overseas university, where the degree was taught in English. Include a letter from the institution if the language of instruction is not otherwise obvious.
  • Nationality exemption — nationals of majority English-speaking countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, and others listed in the Immigration Rules) are exempt. No separate document is needed.

Note: if you demonstrated English when applying for your current visa, you may not need to demonstrate it again for ILR — confirm with your specific route guidance.

Continuous residence evidence

In addition to visa documents, you must provide evidence of actually living in the UK throughout the period. Include a spread of documents covering the full five years, ideally one or two per year:

  • Payslips (covering the qualifying period)
  • Bank statements (at least the most recent 6 months, plus samples from earlier years)
  • P60 certificates (for each tax year in the qualifying period)
  • Tenancy agreements and/or mortgage statements
  • Council tax bills
  • Utility bills (gas, electricity, broadband) — useful for periods between formal lease agreements
  • HMRC correspondence or self-assessment records (if self-employed)

Employment documents (Skilled Worker route)

If you are applying for ILR on the Skilled Worker route, you must still be employed by your sponsor (or a new sponsor) at the point of application:

  • Current employer letter — on headed paper, confirming your job title, salary, start date, and that your employment is continuing.
  • Last 6 months of payslips — showing your gross salary meets the threshold for your role.
  • Certificate of Sponsorship — your CoS reference number and the grant letter if available.
  • P60 for the most recent tax year.

Relationship documents (Spouse or Partner route)

If you are applying for ILR on the basis of your relationship:

  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate, or evidence of your cohabiting relationship over the qualifying period.
  • Relationship evidence covering the full five years — joint bank account statements, joint tenancy agreements, photographs, travel records together, and correspondence.
  • UK sponsor’s financial documents— payslips, P60, employment letter showing the sponsor’s income meets the financial requirement (currently £29,000 per year as of April 2026).
  • Sponsor’s proof of British citizenship or settled status.

Dependant documents

If your dependants (spouse, children) are applying at the same time:

  • Passport and BRP cards for each dependant
  • Birth certificates for children under 18
  • Evidence the dependant has been in the UK lawfully for the qualifying period
  • Evidence of the continuing relationship (for spouse dependants)

Document format requirements

UKVI has specific format requirements for uploaded documents:

  • Documents must be uploaded as colour scans or photographs — black-and-white copies of passports and BRPs are not accepted.
  • Each document file must be under 6MB.
  • Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, PDF.
  • Foreign language documents must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • Certified copies are not required for most documents — you upload originals digitally.
