UK Skilled Worker Visa Documents: Complete Guide for Indian Applicants 2026
Everything Indian nationals need to know about Skilled Worker visa documents in 2026 — salary thresholds, English requirements, CoS guidance, and the most common mistakes.
India is the single largest source of Skilled Worker visa applications to the UK. In the year ending December 2025, Indian nationals received more Skilled Worker visas than any other nationality — and the route has become significantly more complex in the past two years.
This guide covers the specific documents Indian applicants need for a UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026, the threshold changes that caught many applicants off guard, and the English language requirement that changed in January 2026.
The salary threshold — what changed and what applies to you
The general Skilled Worker salary threshold increased to £41,700 per yearfrom 4 April 2024. A further increase is expected but has not been confirmed at time of writing. Your employer's Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) must show a salary that meets both the general threshold and the going rate for your specific occupation code.
If you are a new entrant — defined as someone currently on a Student visa, on the Graduate route, or within two years of completing a UK degree — a lower threshold of £33,400 applies. This is significant for Indian graduates moving directly from the Graduate route to Skilled Worker employment.
The English language change — January 2026
From 8 January 2026, first-time Skilled Worker applicants must demonstrate English at CEFR B2 level — equivalent to IELTS 5.5 in each component. This is a step up from the previous B1 requirement. Applicants extending an existing Skilled Worker visa still need only B1.
Most Indian applicants meet this through an approved SELT test — IELTS UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or LanguageCert International ESOL SELT. The test must be taken at an approved centre. Results are valid for two years. If you hold a degree taught in English from a UK university or a country on the approved list, you may be exempt from the test.
Your complete document checklist
The documents below are required for a Skilled Worker visa application from an Indian national. Your specific circumstances may require additional evidence — a personalised checklist from VisaVault will reflect your exact situation.
Identity documents
- Valid passport — all pages including previous UK visas and entry stamps
- Previous passports showing travel history
- Any existing UK Biometric Residence Permit or eVisa reference
Sponsorship documents
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number — a 12-character code assigned by your UK employer. Format: 1AB2C34567D8
- CoS must show the correct salary, occupation code (SOC code), and start date. Request a copy of the CoS assignment confirmation from your employer's HR team
- Employer letter confirming employment, salary, and job title
English language evidence
- SELT test certificate at B2 level — IELTS UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or LanguageCert ESOL SELT. Must be from an approved test centre. Valid for 2 years from test date
- OR: Degree certificate with Ecctis verification letter confirming the qualification was taught in English and is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or above
Financial evidence (maintenance funds)
- Bank statements showing £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days ending no earlier than 31 days before your application date. This is the maintenance funds requirement. If your employer is A-rated and confirms they will cover your costs, you are exempt.
- Official bank statements — stamped by your bank or official online statements. Screenshots are not accepted. HDFC, ICICI, SBI, and most Indian banks issue official online statements — call your branch if the online option is unclear
Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate
- India is on the mandatory TB test country list. You must obtain a TB test certificate from an approved clinic before applying. The certificate must be dated less than 6 months before your application date. A list of approved clinics in India is available on GOV.UK. Costs approximately ₹3,500–5,000 at an approved centre.
Common mistakes Indian applicants make
Based on the most common causes of Skilled Worker visa delays and refusals, these are the issues that most frequently affect Indian applications specifically.
Bank statement format. UKVI does not accept screenshots or informal printouts. Your statement must be on official bank letterhead, stamped, or an official online statement PDF. Many Indian applicants submit WhatsApp screenshots of their balance — these are rejected. Allow 3–5 working days to obtain official stamped statements from your branch.
CoS reference transcription errors. The CoS reference number is 12 characters with mixed letters and digits. A single transposition — B for 8, O for 0 — causes an immediate flag. Copy the reference number directly from the confirmation email rather than typing it from memory.
Expired English test certificate. If you took IELTS more than two years before your application date, the certificate is no longer valid even if you passed at the required level. Check the test date on your certificate.
TB test timing. The TB certificate expires 6 months from the test date, not the issue date. If you book early and then delay your application, you may need to retest. Book the TB test as close as possible to when you plan to submit.
How long does the application take?
For Indian applicants applying from India (outside the UK), the standard processing time is approximately 3 weeks from biometric submission. Priority processing (approximately ₹50,000 extra) reduces this to 5 working days. Super-priority aims for a decision by the next working day.
Biometrics are submitted at a VFS Global centre — available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kochi, and Pune. Book the VFS appointment as early as possible — slots fill quickly, especially in Delhi and Mumbai.
Already in the UK on a Graduate or Student visa?
Many Indian applicants switch to the Skilled Worker route from the Graduate visa. You can apply from inside the UK using the in-country switching process. Processing takes up to 8 weeks. You cannot switch from a visitor visa or a short-term student visa.
If you graduated from a UK university in the last 5 years, the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa may also be relevant — it allows you to work without a specific job offer or employer sponsorship for 2–3 years.
