UK Visitor Visa for Parents to Attend Graduation 2026: Complete Guide
How to get a UK visitor visa for parents to attend a university graduation ceremony in 2026. Documents needed, the university letter, how long it takes, and tips for high-scrutiny nationalities.
UK university graduations typically take place between June and July, with some universities holding winter ceremonies in November and December. If your parents or family members need a visa to attend your graduation ceremony, this guide covers exactly what documents they need, when to apply, and how to maximise their chances of approval.
Which visa do parents need?
A Standard Visitor Visa covers attending a graduation ceremony. There is no separate graduation ceremony visa. The applicant applies for a standard 6-month visitor visa and the graduation ceremony attendance is the stated purpose of visit.
When to apply
Apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before the graduation date. Standard processing is approximately 3 weeks (15 working days), but this is an estimate not a guarantee. During peak summer application periods (May through July), processing can take longer as application volumes increase significantly. Do not leave the application until 4 weeks before the ceremony — if there is any delay, there will be no time to address it.
You can apply up to 3 months before the intended travel date. Applying too early (more than 3 months before) is outside the valid window.
The university invitation letter
This is the most important document specific to graduation ceremony applications. The applicant's parents should request a letter from the university's student services or international student office. The letter should state:
- The student's full name and student ID number
- The course they completed and the date of completion
- The graduation ceremony date and location
- That the named applicant(s) are invited as the student's guest(s)
- The university's contact details for verification
Most UK universities are familiar with this request and will produce the letter within a few working days. Contact the student services office or the international student office — not the academic department.
The student's supporting letter
In addition to the university's letter, the student should write a personal letter confirming:
- Their relationship to the visa applicant (mother, father, sibling etc.)
- That they invite the applicant to attend their graduation
- The ceremony date and location
- Their own immigration status in the UK (student visa, graduate visa, settled status, or British citizen)
- Whether they are providing any financial support for the visit
Financial evidence from the parents
Parents applying for a visitor visa to attend a graduation need the same financial evidence as any visitor — bank statements showing sufficient funds and stable financial circumstances. See our guide on visitor visa bank statement requirements for the full detail.
If the student in the UK is covering the costs of the visit (flights, accommodation, expenses), the student's bank statements and a sponsorship letter from the student to their parents is required.
Ties to home country
Parents must demonstrate they have reasons to return home after the ceremony. Strong ties evidence for graduation visitors includes:
- Employment letter confirming they are on approved leave and expected to return on a specific date
- Property ownership evidence
- Other dependants at home (younger children, elderly relatives they care for)
- Business ownership or self-employment evidence
High-scrutiny nationalities — India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh
Parents from these nationalities face higher refusal rates for UK visitor visas in general, and graduation ceremony applications are no exception. The key factors that most commonly lead to refusal for these nationalities are weak ties evidence and financial documents in an unofficial format.
For parents from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, or Bangladesh, the most important things to get right are:
- Official bank statements — branch-stamped for most banks in these countries, not screenshots or informal printouts
- A strong employment letter with a specific return date
- Property documents if applicable
- Previous travel history to other countries with similar visa requirements — US, Schengen, Canada, UAE — if available, include copies of those visas and entry stamps
