British Citizenship by Naturalisation — Checklist & Application Guide

Applying for British citizenship is a one-shot decision: the fee is not refunded if you apply too early or leave something out. VisaVault builds a personalised document checklist from your own residence and absence history, drafts your covering letter, and gives you a pre-submission check before you pay the Home Office. Use the free citizenship tracker to follow your application after you apply.

Do I qualify for the British citizenship application?

Settled status

You normally need Indefinite Leave to Remain or settled status, and to have held it for at least 12 months. If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, the 12-month wait does not apply.

Residence in the UK

You must have lived in the UK lawfully for 5 years, with no more than 450 days outside the UK in that period and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months. The Home Office can use discretion for some excess absences.

Life in the UK test and English

You must pass the Life in the UK test and show English at B1 level, unless you are exempt (for example by age or nationality).

Good character

You must declare criminal convictions, immigration breaches and anything else relevant. Dishonesty in earlier applications can lead to refusal.

Referees

You need 2 referees who meet the Home Office criteria. Check the current referee rules on GOV.UK before asking anyone.

Document checklist

VisaVault generates a personalised version of this list for your exact circumstances.

Valid passport (and previous passports)

Previous passports help prove your travel history across the 5-year qualifying period.

Proof of ILR or settled status

Your decision letter, or your eVisa share code. The grant date decides when you can apply.

Evidence of 5 years residence

Payslips, P60s, bank statements, council tax or utility bills spread across the period.

Travel history and absence record

Every trip outside the UK in the last 5 years, checked against the 450 and 90 day limits.

Life in the UK test pass letter

The original pass notification with your reference number.

English language evidence

An approved test certificate, a qualifying degree, or proof of exemption.

Details of two referees

Entered directly on the GOV.UK form. VisaVault never stores your referees’ details.

Marriage certificate and spouse evidence (if relevant)

Needed if you rely on being married to a British citizen to skip the 12-month wait.
