A visitor visa and a spouse visa can differ by months, even when both are decided by the same Home Office. This guide breaks down typical processing times for every major UK visa route in 2026, what happens between biometrics and decision, and when it is worth paying for priority service.

Skilled Worker visa processing times 2026
Once you have submitted your application and attended biometrics, new Skilled Worker applications from outside the UK are typically decided within 3 weeks. In-country applications (switching or extending) usually take around 8 weeks. Priority service can bring an in-country decision to 5 working days, and super priority to the next working day, where available.
The clock starts after biometrics, not after you submit the form. The most common cause of delay is an unverifiable Certificate of Sponsorship or discrepancies between your application and your sponsor's records.
Student visa processing times 2026
Student visa applications from outside the UK are normally decided within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment. In practice many are faster — a week or less outside peak season. Apply early for September intakes: July to September is the busiest period and decision times stretch.
Delays are usually caused by problems verifying your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) or maintenance funds. Make sure your bank statements meet the financial evidence requirements before you apply.
Spouse and family visa processing times 2026
Spouse and partner applications from outside the UK typically take up to 12 weeks — longer than work or study routes because of the relationship and financial evidence checks. In-country extensions and switching applications are usually decided within 8 weeks.
Family applications are the route most likely to face further document requests. Priority is most worthwhile for in-country work and family applications with a clear deadline. For a straightforward visitor visa applied for early, it is rarely necessary.
